The SW Steakhouse at Wynn in Las Vegas

On my most recent trip to Las Vegas I ate dinner one evening at the SW Steakhouse restaurant at the Wynn Hotel. Most restaurant reviewers rate SW Steakhouse in the top ten of steak houses in Las Vegas and I completely agree.

The restaurant is located next to the Lake of Dreams, which is a small artificial lake just outside the hotel and casino area. About every 25 minutes or so there is a clever show on the lake that lasts about five minutes. Our waiter told us that there are about seven different mini-shows that rotate through the night. During my meal I saw three shows, one featuring a giant frog singing “What a Wonderful World” with the voice of Louis Armstrong, one featuring giant animated flowers, and one featuring lighted globes that did a dance on the water. My favorite mini-show was the one with the globes.

My meal was every bit as good as I expected. I had filet mignon. I asked for my steak to be cooked between rare and medium rare, and it was done perfectly — no easy task. And it was delicious. My friend had a 20-ounce bone-in rib eye steak that was also cooked just right. Because I’d eaten at SW before, I knew how big the portions are there, so I didn’t get carried away ordering side dishes because I wanted to save room for dessert. All I had was some pureed/mashed potatoes. Additionally, all the Wynn and Encore restaurants have some of the best breads anywhere and I had a couple of small pieces before my filet. If you are ever in Las Vegas and want to eat at an upscale steak house, I highly recommend SW Steakhouse at the Wynn Hotel.
